Is a Broadway show worth it

For first time NYC visitors, absolutely. Broadway is part of the city identity and the production quality (lighting, set design, vocal talent) is unmatched anywhere. A great Broadway show is a 2.5 hour cultural experience that you will remember years later.

The visit is recommended for theater fans, couples on a date, families with kids 8 and up, and visitors who want a quintessentially NYC evening. Skip if you do not enjoy musicals (most Broadway is musical) or if you are visiting in less than 24 hours.

Types of tickets

Broadway tickets come in 5 main categories from cheapest to most expensive.

  • Lottery tickets ($25 to $50): Daily digital lottery for front-row or premium orchestra seats. Enter through show app.
  • Rush tickets ($35 to $80): Box office same-day discount. Some shows restrict to students or under 30.
  • TKTS booth ($60 to $150): Same-day discount (25 to 50 percent off) at Times Square booth.
  • Standard advance purchase ($100 to $250): Online or box office, regular pricing.
  • Premium dynamic pricing ($250 to $499): Best seats for the most popular shows.

Best time to attend

Tuesday and Wednesday evening shows are the easiest to book and have the smallest tourist crowds. Saturday matinee and Sunday evening shows have higher demand.

For lottery success, Tuesday lotteries have the best odds. For TKTS, midweek afternoon (1pm to 3pm) has the shortest queues.
