What it is
The Statue of Liberty is the copper colossus that has greeted ships entering New York Harbor since 1886, a gift from France that became the symbol of arrival and freedom for millions of immigrants. Standing 93 metres from base to torch on Liberty Island, the statue shares the harbor with Ellis Island, the historic immigration station that processed twelve million newcomers and now houses a moving museum of their stories. Together they form one of the most visited monuments in the world.
How to visit
Every visit starts with a ferry from Battery Park in Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey, the only authorized boats to land on the islands. A basic ticket lets you walk the grounds of Liberty Island and visit Ellis Island; pedestal and crown access cost more and must be booked well ahead, especially in summer. Allow at least half a day to do both islands justice, including the security screening and the museum. Arrive for an early ferry to beat the longest lines and the midday heat.
Hours & practical info
Islands open daily, roughly 9am to 5pm with seasonal ferry schedules. Crown and pedestal require advance reservation.
Insider tips
- ✓ Book crown or pedestal access weeks ahead in summer, it sells out fast.
