What it is
Fifth Avenue's holiday windows are unveiled each year around the middle or end of November and stay up until early January. Bergdorf Goodman's windows at 754 Fifth Avenue are built by a team of about 100 artisans working roughly nine months on hand crafted sets. Saks Fifth Avenue at 611 Fifth Avenue, directly across from the Rockefeller tree, pairs its windows with a facade light show that loops every ten minutes in the evening. The whole thing is free from the sidewalk.
What to expect
A walk, not an event. Start at Bergdorf Goodman at 58th Street and work south past Bloomingdale's outpost windows, Saks at 50th and the Rockefeller tree opposite. Evenings are when the Saks facade show runs and also when the sidewalk becomes a slow moving queue managed by police barriers. Weekday mornings you can stand in front of each window for as long as you like.
Getting there
Take the N, R or W to Fifth Avenue-59th Street for the north end, or the B, D, F and M to 47th-50th Streets Rockefeller Center for the Saks end. Walking the stretch takes fifteen minutes without stopping and about an hour if you actually look.
