What it is

NYC Restaurant Week is the city's prix fixe season, run twice a year by the official tourism organisation. Hundreds of restaurants across the five boroughs serve fixed price lunch and dinner menus at a set number of tiers, well below their usual cost. It runs for several weeks despite the name, once in the depths of winter and once in July, and reservations for the good rooms open before the menus do.

What to expect

The value is real at the top end and thin at the bottom. A restaurant that normally charges triple for a tasting menu is the reason to book. A neighbourhood place whose regular lunch already costs about the same is not. Menus are shorter than the standard carte, drinks and tips are extra, and the most wanted tables go within hours of reservations opening. Many restaurants exclude weekend evenings.

Getting there

Nothing to reach: it happens in restaurants across all five boroughs. Booking is done through the official site, which links each restaurant to its own reservation platform, and it is worth looking beyond Midtown, where the discount is deepest relative to the normal price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Restaurant Week cost?
It is a fixed price per person at a small number of published tiers, set fresh each edition, with drinks, tax and tip on top.
When is it held?
Twice a year. The winter edition runs from late January into February, and the summer edition runs through July. Exact dates are announced a few weeks ahead.
Do you need to book ahead?
For anything well known, yes, and on the day reservations open. Walk in tables exist but not at the restaurants that make the promotion worth it.
Is the menu the same as the normal one?
No. It is a shorter prix fixe built for the promotion, usually two or three courses with a handful of choices per course.
