Free festivals that deserve a detour

September in New York does not have to cost much. The closing weeks are popular. Get there early if you want a good spot on the lawn. Check the schedule and pick one show that fits your plans. Treat it as part of a loose Manhattan afternoon.

Labor Day in Brooklyn is a different animal

Before you plan around quiet book stalls, know that the West Indian American Day Parade and J'Ouvert take over Brooklyn over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Gothamist has a practical guide to moving around as the streets fill. Expect real concentration on Eastern Parkway and the surrounding blocks. This is not the day to drive in central Brooklyn. Use the subway, leave extra time, and treat the parade as the main event of the day, not a quick stop.

Pick between the two quieter events for the rest of your trip. The book festival works better on a weekday, when lines are shorter. SummerStage works better on a weekend evening, when the atmosphere in the park is worth the crowd. Both are free, so the only expense is your time.
