Free festivals that deserve a detour
September in New York does not have to cost much. The Brooklyn Book Festival, now in its 21st year, runs for nine days across all five boroughsBoroughOne of the five divisions of New York City: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. and brings more than 250 publishers to its Downtown Brooklyn hub, according to Secret NYC. Pulitzer winners are on the author list. Most programming is free, and the main hub is easy to build a day around if you are staying in Brooklyn.
In Central ParkCentral ParkThe 843-acre engineered wilderness at Manhattan's heart, designed by Olmsted and Vaux in 1858., the Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage is closing its 40th anniversary season with a stretch of free concerts at Rumsey Playfield from September 2 through October 1, according to Secret NYC. The closing weeks are popular. Get there early if you want a good spot on the lawn. Check the schedule and pick one show that fits your plans. Treat it as part of a loose Manhattan afternoon.
Labor Day in Brooklyn is a different animal
Before you plan around quiet book stalls, know that the West Indian American Day Parade and J'Ouvert take over Brooklyn over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Gothamist has a practical guide to moving around as the streets fill. Expect real concentration on Eastern Parkway and the surrounding blocks. This is not the day to drive in central Brooklyn. Use the subway, leave extra time, and treat the parade as the main event of the day, not a quick stop.
Pick between the two quieter events for the rest of your trip. The book festival works better on a weekday, when lines are shorter. SummerStage works better on a weekend evening, when the atmosphere in the park is worth the crowd. Both are free, so the only expense is your time.
