What it is
Free Shakespeare in the Park is The Public Theater's summer season at the open air Delacorte Theater inside Central Park, running since 1962. Every ticket is free. The productions are full scale, frequently cast with well known screen actors, and the theatre reopened after a full renovation in 2025. Tickets are distributed by digital lottery and by a limited in person standby line on the day.
What to expect
An 1,800 seat amphitheatre with Belvedere Castle and the trees of the park behind the stage, and a show that starts as the light goes. The lottery is the sane route: you enter online on the day, or in advance for some performances, and find out in the afternoon. The standby line still exists for the determined. Bring a layer, because the park after dark in June is colder than the afternoon suggests, and performances go ahead through light rain.
Getting there
The Delacorte sits mid park near 80th Street. Enter at West 81st Street from the B and C at 81st Street-Museum of Natural History, or at East 79th Street from the 6 at 77th Street. It is a ten minute walk in from either gate and the paths are lit but the park is dark, so leave with the crowd rather than alone.
