Governors Ball is New York's biggest mainstream music festival, three days over a weekend in early June at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. It started on Governors Island in 2011, which is where the name comes from, and moved through Randall's Island before settling at the Queens site. Line ups mix headline pop and hip hop with a deep card of smaller acts, and tickets are sold as three day passes and single days.
What to expect
Multiple stages across open parkland, a hard bag policy, and a site that empties into one subway station at the same moment every night. Single day tickets exist but the three day pass is where the pricing works. June in New York can be 34 degrees or it can rain sideways, and the ground turns to mud fast, so footwear matters more than at a European festival on grass.
Getting there
Take the 7 train to Mets-Willets Point, which is the same stop as the US Open and Citi Field and puts you a short walk from the gates. The Long Island Rail Road also stops at Mets-Willets Point on event days. Leaving after the headliner means a long queue for the platform, so a walk to 111th Street on the 7 is often faster.
