What it is
The US Open is the last tennis Grand Slam of the year and it takes over Flushing Meadows in Queens at the end of every summer. Its main court, Arthur Ashe Stadium, opened in 1997 and is the largest tennis stadium in the world with 23,771 seats, more than 7,500 above any other venue, and it has had a retractable roof since 2016. The free Fan Week of qualifying and practice runs the week before the main draw.
What to expect
A grounds pass is the value ticket: it gets you into every court except Arthur Ashe, and the outer courts are where you stand close enough to hear the players talk. Day sessions run long and hot, night sessions inside Ashe are the ones people fly in for. Fan Week, the qualifying week before the tournament proper, is free to attend and is the single cheapest way to watch top players hit a ball in New York.
Getting there
Take the 7 train to Mets-Willets Point, which drops you at the boardwalk a few minutes from the gates, or the Long Island Rail Road to Mets-Willets Point on match days. The 7 runs express during the tournament and is far quicker than driving into a park with limited paid parking.
