After two hours inside Ellis, take the next ferry back to Liberty and see the Statue without time pressure. Reverse the common order and both islands improve.

Is Ellis Island worth it?

The museum tells a specific story that no other New York site tells, how millions of arrivals passed through one building, how inspectors examined them, and how the records still matter for family research. If that story interests you, two to three hours disappears quickly.

Who should skip it? Travelers whose main goal is the Statue photo. If you only have a harbor tour with a stop of forty minutes, do not count that as visiting Ellis. If you have limited mobility, check the accessible route before going, the building is large and the exhibits spread out. For everyone else, make room for it.

Getting there, cost and what to bring

The ferry is the only passenger way to Ellis Island. Boats leave from Battery Park in Manhattan and from Liberty State Park in New Jersey. The ticket covers both Ellis and Liberty. Book the ferry online in advance, because same-day tickets can sell out in peak season and the ticket window line moves slowly.

Arrive at the departure point 45-60 minutes before your ferry for security screening. From Manhattan, the crossing to Liberty takes about 15-20 minutes, and the short leg to Ellis comes after. The first ferries usually leave around 8:30 in peak season, and the museum normally opens right around 9:00. These times shift by season, so check the schedule when you book.

Bring water and a snack. The island cafe is small, prices are high, and lines build at midday. Dress in layers because the interior can be warm in summer and cold in winter. Wear shoes you can stand in. Leave large bags at your hotel because the security line at the pier is easier without them.
