Top of the Rock

Why Top of the Rock beats the Empire State Building for the classic skyline photo, how the Skylift works, and why the sundown slot is worth planning.

En corto
Go to Top of the Rock for the one New York photo you cannot get from the Empire State Building: the Empire State Building itself. The upper deck faces it directly, so the classic shot works at any hour, but sunset is why the slots sell out first. Book the sunset slot, skip the Skylift if your budget is tight, and shoot the building before you shoot yourself.

Consejo local
Go straight to the south railing on the top deck and find the spot where the Empire State Building lines up with the buildings in front of it. Get there 15 minutes before sunset, and take the tower photo before you turn the camera on yourself.

Top of the Rock is not the highest deck in New York and not the most famous one. It is the one where the Empire State Building shows up in the frame the way postcards show it. That subject, more than the height or the brand, is the reason to pay for a view.

Why does this deck have the Empire State Building in the frame?

The observation deck looks south from Rockefeller Center, about 16 blocks north of the Empire State Building. Top of the Rock has three levels: 67, 69 and 70. The top level is open air, and its south-facing railing lines up with the tower almost dead center in the frame. From the Empire State Building's own deck, the building is not in the picture. From One World, it is just one tower among many. This deck is the only place where the classic shot works.

What does the Skylift add?

The Skylift is a glass elevator pod that rides up the outside wall of the building on the west side. It is a short ride, more thrill than transport. If you like glass floors and open heights, it is fun. If you came for the skyline, skip it and spend the extra on a better time slot. The deck at the end is the same deck the regular elevator reaches.

Is Top of the Rock worth it?

Yes, if you want that Empire State Building photograph. It is generally cheaper than the Empire State Building, with shorter queues, and the subject of the photo is the building you came to see. Skip it if you want the highest open-air deck in Manhattan, because that is the Empire State Building itself. Skip it if open railings make you freeze. For everyone else, this is one of the few paid views in New York that actually delivers what the marketing photos show.

How long does a visit really take?

Plan 60-90 minutes if you want all three levels and some time at the railing. If you only want the Empire State Building shot, you can go straight to the top, take the photo, and be back on the street in about 30 minutes. The bottleneck is the entrance. Security screening and the elevator line can eat 15-45 minutes, so show up before your entry slot, not at it. In the off-season, a midday slot can be near empty. On a holiday weekend, expect the same wait you would get at airport security.

What it costs and how to get there

Admission is tied to a specific time slot, so there is no single walk-up price. An adult ticket for the top deck usually falls around 40-50 USD, with sunset slots running higher, sometimes 60-70 USD. The Skylift is an add-on in the 20-30 USD range. Treat all of these as estimates. To get there, take the subway to 47-50 Streets Rockefeller Center on the B/D/F/M lines or 51st Street on the 6 line. The observation entrance is off 50th Street inside Rockefeller Center. Bring a jacket. The top deck is open to the wind, and a calm summer evening turns cold up there once the sun is gone. A phone with a clean lens is all you need for the photo.

When to go: the sunset slot question

Sunset slots sell out first because the Empire State Building catches the last light and glows amber while the rest of the city goes blue. In summer, that slot can be gone days ahead. In winter, you can sometimes book it the same morning. If your dates are fixed, book as soon as you can. Then still arrive 15 minutes early. The line on the street does not care about your reservation, and once the sun drops the show is over. One warning from experience: do not spend the first ten minutes taking selfies. The light moves fast. Shoot the Empire State Building first, then take the selfies, then look at the city.

Preguntas frecuentes

Which level should I go to first?
Go straight to the top deck, the 70th floor. That is where the open railing lines up with the Empire State Building. The lower levels are nice for shelter but not for the main photo.
Is the Skylift worth the extra cost?
It is a short glass elevator ride on the outside of the building. It is fun if you enjoy heights, but it ends at the same deck you get with the regular ticket. For most people, skip it and spend the money on a sunset slot.
How far in advance do sunset tickets sell out?
On summer weekends and around Christmas, sunset slots can sell out days ahead. Check the official site about a week out. In winter, you can sometimes book a sunset slot the same morning.
Is Top of the Rock better than the Empire State Building?
That depends on what you want to photograph. Top of the Rock is the only one that gives you the Empire State Building in the frame. The Empire State Building gives you a higher perch and the view down Fifth Avenue. For the classic skyline photo, Top of the Rock wins.
How long should I spend up there?
Plan 60-90 minutes if you want sunset light and different angles. If you only need the Empire State Building shot, you can be in and out in about 30 minutes. The biggest wait is the entrance, not the deck.
